Medical Coding Helper

Suggest ICD-10-CM codes from a diagnosis description. Returns ranked codes with confidence, reasoning, coding notes, differential alternatives, and missing info.

What it does

suggest_icd10 — takes diagnosis text + optional patient age/sex → returns:

  • primary_diagnosis — top code (e.g. E11.9)
  • suggestions — 1-5 codes sorted by confidence, each with:
    • icd10_code — e.g. E11.9
    • icd10_description — full description
    • chapter — chapter number/name
    • confidence (0-1)
    • reasoning (1-2 sentences)
    • notes — coding notes / exclusions
  • differential_codes — alternatives if diagnosis is ambiguous
  • missing_info — what info would sharpen coding (laterality, severity, chronic vs acute)
  • needs_review, confidence, disclaimer

Example

Diagnosis: Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications, patient on metformin Age: 55, Sex: male

Output:

{
  "primary_diagnosis": "E11.9",
  "suggestions": [{
    "icd10_code": "E11.9",
    "icd10_description": "Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications",
    "chapter": "Chapter 4: Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases",
    "confidence": 0.95,
    "reasoning": "The diagnosis clearly indicates Type 2 diabetes mellitus without complications, which directly corresponds to code E11.9.",

  }],
